I've had paper lanterns for years, and the hanging mechanism (in approximately 6 lanterns bought over a period of 10 years) has always been the same: square metal with 4 pointy ends and a twisted metal circle on one of the short ends. It's hard to explain, but if you've had a lantern you'll know what I mean. It allows for the bulb to hang free but stop from dropping the lantern because it's "weaved" through the metal.
This lantern was different - it had two circular metal pieces meant to cup the bulb. Also it was U shaped (the 2 top pointy prongs had nothing connecting them) - which means you can't even jerry-rig something to hold the wire at the top of the bulb. The cupped metal circles don't work with a CFL bulb. I tried all sorts of bending for it work. In the end I had to scrap an old lantern's metal framework for the twisted metal part.
