Product Review

NOVICA, in association with National Geographic, searches the world to work directly with the finest artisan designers. Crafted of cotton, this set of five brilliant pencil cases is brightly clad in the renowned appliqué work of the Lisu people. They are one of Thailand's many hill tribes that migrated from China and the Tibet. Lisu textiles are famed for their colorful exuberance, which is perfectly showcased in each of these pencil cases. Artisan Info: Traditionally, the tribal people in northern Thailand have supported their families through slash and burn agriculture, being forced to move their villages every few years searching for new and fertile fields. However, as the available space is limited, this semi-nomadic style is no longer feasible. On the other hand, based on ecological criteria, the Thai government is banning the timber cut down, trim, and hauling on the hillside lands. Thus, the hill tribes have explored new options for solving their economical needs while preserving their communal life, and the answer was found in their handicrafts.

If these become available again, get them. They are well made fabric pencil cases with a bit of padding. They are a bit smaller than most pencil cases -- only holding a few writing implements. But they're perfect for my use -- knitting/crochet kits. I can fit stitch markers, scissors, several crochet hooks, point protectors, and even a small tape measure in each one.

A personally signed postcard with information about the region where these were made was included, which made these feel even more special, not just a mass-produced item you could buy at any school supply store.
